This exhibition uses engravings, paintings, photography, and numerous other visual and audible testimonies to illustrate the radical change in the perception of Rothenburg ob der Tauber between the 18th and 21st centuries. This transformation in perception is reflected in the change in perspective, subject matter, and image detail. It becomes clear how, from the paintings of around 1900, a canon of motifs gradually evolved and wasused for reproductions and later for the mass distribution of postcards. All these visual testimonies have contributed to the tourist image of Rothenburg – an image that its people are now evaluating with an increasingly critical eye.

Special Exhibition in Rothenburg Museum Refectory "Rothenburg in London" Its Influence on The Garden City Movement

Even as far back as 1906, Rothenburg was already being used as an example for the design and construction of the garden town of Hampstead near London. Everything, from overall grounds down to a house’s interior design, was to provide people with a garden town fit for habitation. This was in response to the terrible, crowded living conditions of workers in cities during the early period of industrialization.
The English architect Raymond Unwin chose Rothenburg ob der Tauber as an example for urban development. While planning the garden town of Hampstead Garden Suburb, Unwin, a student of William Morris, incorporated architectural motifs such as Rothenburg’s towers, roof designs, arcades, staircases and window designs in his plans, also incorporating the use of trams, squares, and city greens.
Drawing on plans, photos, sketches, models and previously unpublished source materials, this special exhibition demonstrates for the first time Rothenburg’s significance as an architectural example for the planning of both Hampstead Suburb as well as the garden town of Hellerau near Dresden. The role of picturesque architecture, and therefore Rothenburg ob der Tauber, at the threshold of modern Bauhaus architecture, will be reconstructed in discussions between renowned architects Richard Riemerschmid, Camillo Sitte, Hermann Muthesius, Raymond Unwin, Ernst May, Barry Parker, Theodor Fischer and others.

The old city of Rothenburg lies high above the river Tauber, framed to east by the foothills of the Franconian Heights.
